Edgar and Tian met at the Cinelux Almaden movie theater. Edgar was employed there as floor staff and Tian was there for assistant manager training from the Plaza theater location. Edgar had a reputation at Almaden for being the Rat-Killer, a legendary title which staff members still whisper about to this day. Tian transferred to Almaden after her training period finished. At the end of the summer, Edgar put in his two weeks due to starting his senior year of school. On his last day, Tian asked Edgar if he would like to get coffee. They ended up getting boba instead. After a few weeks of dates, the two spent an evening at the Santa Cruz boardwalk and ended up perched on a lifeguard tower where Edgar asked Tian to be his girlfriend. As soon as her work shift was over, she picked up Edgar and they drove over to the beach. Edgar had a playlist prepared for them to listen to on the drive. At this time of night, the beaches were closed and everything was pitch-dark, but a few lingering lights from the boardwalk were visible. They sat on a log and ate dinner, after which Edgar got down on one knee, forgot what he was going to say for his grand speech, and asked Tian to marry him. She told him "Of course." They were on the opposite side of the boardwalk to where Edgar had asked Tian to be his girlfriend.
