To our friends & family,

Tom and I often talk about how lucky we are to be so loved by our circle. We are beyond excited to start this new chapter together and look forward to celebrating with each one of you. We promise it will be worth missing the OU/TX game ;)

A Tale of Crackers and Carabiners: How We Met

When I was a little girl, obsessed with fairytales and matchmaking my barbies, I would ask my mother, “How will I know I’ve met the one?” My mother would wave her hand and sigh and say, “You’ll just know.” I would roll my eyes, and wonder why this was the limit to my mother’s otherwise infinite knowledge. When Tom was a little boy, he was far more concerned with taking machetes to the bamboo forests in his backyard and skateboarding. He was not asking about his future wife, rather, he wanted to know if his best friends were free to stir up trouble in the neighborhood. On an early spring day in Oklahoma City, I would finally understand my mother’s cryptically wise answer and Thomas would find his forever partner in crime. Adam Lewis, friend to both Thomas and me, orchestrated our meeting. To me, he said that Thomas was cute and kind and funny. To Thomas, he promised the same. We both agreed to the date and met at Scissortail Park for a picnic. On the day, the grass was green and the sky bright. Thomas wore a denim jacket and I did too. This commonality was the first of many. On a quilted blanket, stitched by Thomas’ grandmother, Tom unpacked an immaculate spread of crackers, cheese, wine, and fruit. I was impressed. As we sat and talked, I found myself responding, “Wait… me too!” to all of the interests and hobbies Thomas loved. We talked about art and music and museums. The conversation was instantly easy. Meaningful and light all at once. As the sky purpled, Thomas held out his hand. With a mischievous smile, he said had something else planned. We left the park and went to a climbing gym. Tom was a climber. I was not. Together, Thomas encouraged and I attempted. We shared in trust and laughs. Thomas later revealed his ulterior motive (he wanted to see if “I could hang…”). Until then, I just thought he wanted to show off his own athleticism. The date gained a spontaneous third part when Thomas and I went for food after the climbing gym. It wasn’t long after this that we were dating seriously. I learned that knowing feels easy and meaningful. Like answering every question with, me too. Thomas learned something valuable too… I can hang.
