There simply isn't enough time to take in all of Charleston's history, but below are places or activities that can take you back in time in the Holy City: - Carriage Ride Tours: Old South Carriage Company - Mansion Tours: Nathaniel Russel House, Calhoun Mansion - War-related Tours: U.S.S. Yorktown, Fort Sumter Fun Facts: 1. The intersection of Meeting St. and Broad St. is called the Four Corners of Law - the four buildings are the US Post Office and Federal Courthouse, the SC State Courthouse, Charleston City Hall, and St. Michael's Church (Country, State, City, God) 2. The large rectangular cement blocks on some sidewalks are called "Mounting Blocks" or "Carriage Stones." They were used as steps to mount tall horses and carriages when they were the main mode of transportation. 3. Look carefully at the sides of many old downtown buildings. If you see metal circles with bolts in the middle, they are hurricane/earthquake rods to help pull houses back together if damaged during storms.
