The Holy Mystery of Crowning
We are getting married at Therese's parish which is of the Byzantine Catholic Church of the Ruthenian tradition, one of the many Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church.
In the Eastern Catholic tradition, the priest leads the bride and groom down the aisle and then crowns the couple in marriage by placing crowns upon their heads, symbolizing:
- Crowns of Royalty; their royalty as the king and queen of their new kingdom, their domestic church
- Crowns of Martyrdom; their call to martyrdom, to give witness to God's love in their married life
- Crowns of Glory; their participation in the Divine Life through receiving this Holy Mystery and their call to be fully united to God in Heaven
Therese and John also wish to have the celebration of the Divine Liturgy (the equivalent to the Holy Mass) be a part of their wedding day.
The main celebrant of the Holy Mystery of Crowning and the Divine Liturgy will be Bishop Milan Lach, SJ.
