Lisa and Rob met in Pai, Thailand in the early fall of 2015 while on separate backpacking trips in Southeast Asia. After an awesome first night of getting to know one another and drinking questionable buckets of Thai alcohol, Rob told Lisa he was leaving Pai early the next morning. At this point, Lisa didn’t think she’d see Rob again, but a few days later, as she was boarding a boat for Laos, she heard a familiar (loud) laugh behind her, and turned to see Rob walking down the steps, ready to board the same boat. From there, they traveled around Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam together, then met each other's families and friends in both the US and England. After that, the rest, as they say, was history (filled with international moves, a relocation to Florida, new jobs, law school round two, stints of long-distance dating, lots of concerts, amazing adventures across 13 countries, two apartments, one adopted cat, and more visa papers than they'd like to count).
After Rob made Lisa believe for months that he was taking her on a trip to South America, he surprised her two days before their departure by telling her they were really going to Brugge, Belgium. Lisa was so excited to consume all the beer, chocolate, and waffles she could get her hands on, even after falling mysteriously ill on the second day of their trip (she blames the easiest go-to: airplane food). Rob, acting with his usual persistence, asked Lisa to go for a walk with him to Minnewater Park, despite her sickness. So, after a trip to the pharmacist, the pair walked to Minnewater Park while Rob held Lisa's bag of medications in his hand. Once they got to the park, Rob headed toward a bridge, explaining to Lisa that it was Lover's Bridge, which overlooked Lover's Lake. The story goes that if you kiss while on Lover's Bridge, your love will be eternal. Lisa knew things were about to get real when Rob hung up her bag of meds on one of the bridge posts and dropped down to one knee. After Lisa said yes, she miraculously felt well enough to consume 4 bottles of champagne throughout the rest of the day. She woke up the next day with a throbbing headache, and an immeasurable amount of love for her new fiancé.
