How We Met

Prank Call Gone Wrong

In 2012, Bella was "dating" one of her fellow classmates at Pleasant Valley Junior High School, and he was on a travel soccer team. One weekend while he was away, Bella received a phone call from a number she didn't recognize, and picked up. She was greeted by a strange voice asking her "what kind of lipstick she prefers her men to wear", followed by adolescent giggles. A prank call gone wrong, she hung up and texted the number, demanding to know who it was. Upon receiving verification of the name of the stranger, she went to Facebook to investigate. She stumbled upon the strangest man she had ever seen - his profile picture was a brightly flashed selfie with a black, curly-haired wig atop his head. She vowed she would never associate with him, especially since he went to a different school district. Case closed - or so she thought! Fast forward one year, and Bella and this soccer boy had broken up, but remained good friends. At this point, she knew she would be transferring to Davenport Central in the fall of that year, so she went to the Pleasant Valley x Davenport Central varsity soccer game to watch her friend play and scope out her future prospects. Her PV friend was a freshman playing varsity, so after his name was called in the initial lineup, she cheered loudly. What she didn't expect was to hear a familiar name, also a freshman, be called in the DC varsity lineup. She immediately picked up her phone and texted the number she had saved for some reason from the previous spring, and wrote, "Freshman on varsity? How impressive ;) this is Bella btw, I'm transferring to Central this fall!" She was curious about this boy, especially in the natural light, without the wig. After the game, he responded, "haha yeah, I heard that! Welcome!" and that was the end of their communication, yet again. On the first day of school, Bella was intimidated about the lunch situation - would you believe it? She didn't know anyone, was the new girl with a reputation (oops!), and was dressed up way more than her classmates. She pulled out her phone to text her acquaintance and asked what lunch period he had. He had the same one as her, and agreed to meet her in the hallway outside of her science class to walk with her, so she wasn't alone. Giddy, Bella waited for ten minutes after the bell rang. He never showed. Bella strutted into the lunchroom, head held high, and made eye contact with Mitchell - he looked away, definitely already in love with her. Bella sat with the drama kids that day and for the rest of the month, before eventually moving over to the "cool kids" table (sorry, drama kids!!!), where Mitchell also sat. Bella's attempts for Mitchell's attention didn't end there - she needed a date to homecoming. She already had a dress and would not suffer social suicide by going alone, so she enlisted the help of her two new friends she had met through show choir, Sam and Tyson, to convince Mitchell to ask her. He did NOT WANT TO! First, he didn't want to go at all. Then, he wanted to ask someone else, but she had already committed to going with another guy. He decided he wouldn't go. But slowly, as she worked her charm every day at lunch, he was convinced. Three days before the dance, he asked her by putting a fake parking ticket on her cute Mini Cooper after school (she had already received a real parking ticket and was very stressed about this paper being on her dashboard). She had to play it cool, but she was very excited. The night of the dance, Mitchell wooed and impressed Bella with his gentlemanlike conduct. He opened doors, pulled out chairs, and danced with her all night. He texted her once home, regretting that he didn't tell her how beautiful she had looked. The rest is history. Throughout high school, into college, across the country and continents, the two have remained just the same - Bella needing attention, and Mitchell procrastinating (I mean, this wedding is twelve years later). Thanks for being a part of our story!
