Our Story

Like all great loves, ours started with a lie.

We met on Hinge. Ben had a photo on his profile with his brother, Chris, where they were posed under a rock that had "Ugly Brothers" graffitied on it, and mine said that I couldn't wink. When we matched, Ben messaged me saying he couldn't wink, either. Our first date was at a Pirates game. We think they played the Milwaukee Brewers (and still have no idea who won). Ben had just undergone shoulder surgery, so he warned me he was in a sling and had a beard for the first time in his life because he was afraid to shave with his left hand. I liked the beard, and the sling didn't stop him from holding every possible door open for me throughout the night. Two of our friends sat behind us at the game, although we didn't know it – we talked for the entire game, entirely in our own bubble. I asked him if he liked politics (and he later sent me a picture of a framed photo of Richard Nixon in his closet) and he told me some of the craziest work gossip I've heard to this day. At some point, we went to get a beer and our friends spotted us, trying to get our attention. They'd later tell us we were too into each other and the conversation to notice them. And, one even texted Ben's dad to say, "There's a 60% chance I just met your future daughter-in-law." Ben and I will have been together for just over seven years before we get married. In that time, Ben's bought a house that we've worked on (with serious help from his dad); Ben's taught me how to ski and we've gone on trips to Mammoth, Vail, Breckenridge, and Holiday Valley; we've added our best girl, Piper, to our family and seen Pippin be the most patient older brother; we've traveled to Nevis, Portugal, and Spain; and watched every end-of-the-world and political action movie and TV series that's ever come out, all while building the strongest foundation for our relationship – minus the lie about us not being able to wink. We can, albeit horribly. We both knew remarkably quickly that we were in the presence of someone special – someone who felt like home and made things easy. Our friends would say the same thing, and one in particular definitely should have said there was a 100% chance he'd met Dave's future daughter-in-law that day at PNC Park.
