Adam was always close with his cousin and groomsman, Ted Cohn. Winter became friends with Ted while they both played in the Purdue University "All-American" Marching Band. When Ted and Winter lived in Chicago after graduating, they would often have dinner at an Italian restaurant called Pizza Rustica. When Adam moved from the suburbs of Chicago into the city, Ted invited Adam along to one of these dinners. Winter and Adam were introduced. Adam was excited to meet a new friend. Winter thought Adam was a goofball and rather annoying. True to Adam's persistence (and obliviousness), he first started hitting on Winter on March 22, 2013. Based on Adam's journal entry from that time frame, Adam thought Winter was "awesome, fun, and different." Winter was planning to apply to graduate schools across the U.S. and was not interested in starting a relationship. Through the help of Ted, Adam backed off from all the blatant flirting and just became a part of the friend group. But, like a mushroom, Adam grew on Winter over time (because he's a FUN-GUY-- heh heh). On July 7, 2013, Adam and Winter went on their first official date where they had dinner at Timothy O'Toole's Irish pub and saw the latest Superman movie, Man of Steel. The rest, as they say, is history!
We decided to take a whirlwind road trip to New Orleans since we lived fairly close at that time. Adam surprised Winter with reserving what was apparently the most haunted room in a boutique hotel on Bourbon Street away from the chaos, the Lafitte Hotel and Bar. Winter was pleasantly surprised but oblivious of what was to come. After immediately checking out the beautiful balcony on the second floor, Adam came out with two rocks glasses (etched with the Chicago skyline) and our finest whisky, Royal Salute 21 Year. Winter was confused because a road trip was not usually an event that warranted such a celebration. Adam explained, "We do have something to celebrate." He got down on one knee, professed his love for Winter, and asked if she would be his wife. Through the shock and excitement, Winter said yes! They proceeded to celebrate with that whisky along with a night out on the town in New Orleans! In true Adam and Winter fashion, the night was so fun that they fell asleep in their bed with all of the lights on.
