Samantha and Ryan first met back in high school at St. Charles East. At the time, Samantha was as a freshman and Ryan, who was a sophomore. Their very first interaction was walking to Taco Bell with friends (arguably the most teenage love story beginning there is). By the following year, they shared the same lunch period, always waiting for each other in line, sitting together, and even becoming close with one of the lunch ladies, Denise, who constantly reminded them how cute they’d be as a couple. At the time, though, they were just friends and never thought much of it. As the years went on, life pulled them in different directions. Samantha worked at Silver Lake Chinese Restaurant, where Ryan would often stop by to hang out while she hosted. They spent time together here and there, meeting up with friends, going out once or twice, but eventually drifted apart and lived their lives separately for a while. Then, in 2022, everything changed. They reconnected, and this time, they both realized what Denise had seen all along. What started as a high school friendship grew into something deeper, and that reconnection marked the beginning of forever.
Ryan proposed in Jamaica on November 11, 2024, a date chosen intentionally (with a little help from his mom, Natalie). We had just arrived at the resort a few days earlier, and Ryan was unusually adamant about taking professional photos that Monday, something we typically saved for later in the trip. I thought it was odd, but agreed. The plan was to capture the sunset, but nothing went as expected. The resort photographer briefly appeared, then disappeared completely. Frustrated and ready to give up, I had no interest in continuing, yet Ryan was determined. That’s when the man running the photo booth offered to take our pictures once he finished his shift. What I didn’t know was that Ryan had already shared the real plan with him: he was proposing that night, on 11/11. Later, we walked down to the ocean in the dark and began our “photo shoot.” At one point, the photographer asked me to turn away from Ryan and spin back around when he said so. As I waited, I heard faint cheering in the distance, though I couldn’t see anyone. When I finally turned around, Ryan was on one knee, holding a glowing ring box in the night. Everything stopped. Tears streamed down my face, and the world felt completely still. Looking back, it all unfolded exactly how it was meant to, unexpected, imperfect, and absolutely perfect for us.
