Nate and Hannah met online in March of 2019 when they both "swiped right." During their first conversation, Nate made numerous electrical engineering puns, all of which Hannah missed. Over the following weeks, they got to know each other during their nightly phone calls. Because of Nate's schedule, many of these conversations occurred late at night, and Hannah got into the habit of leaving her phone ringer on to ensure that she never missed a call. During these conversations, they discussed important things such as whether Frozen or Tangled is the better Disney movie. They realized how easy it was to talk to each other, and this fact has continued to allow them to not only be a great couple, but also best friends.

After speaking on the phone for a few weeks, Hannah and Nate finally made plans to meet in person for the first time. On April 13, 2019, they met at RIT, where they attended an acapella concert together (fun fact: Nate was a member of an RIT acapella group called Surround Sound). During the concert, Nate participated in a vocal percussion contest while Hannah blushed in the audience from second-hand embarrassment. After the concert, they got dinner together at Jay's Diner in Henrietta. When Hannah took a bathroom break, her horrible sense of direction led to her accidentally opening the emergency exit door, setting off the diner's security alarm. Nate graciously offered to do the same to make her feel better, but she declined. He made up for it on the way out, however, when he confidently walked face-first into the glass door. On the way back to Nate's apartment, he serenaded Hannah with one of his acapella group's songs. Back at Nate's apartment, the two watched Thor: Ragnarok and shared their first kiss.

Summer of 2019, shortly after they met, Nathan began an internship in Syracuse, NY. On June 8, 2019, Hannah drove home from her shift at Walmart. As she passed the highway, she thought of Nate and decided to take a risk and make the drive to see him on a whim, despite having plans to visit him the following week. When she arrived, she called him and asked "is it an even day or an odd day?" in reference to the parking rules outside of his East Syracuse apartment. He quickly rushed down to let her in, and then instructed her to wait in his room. When he reentered the room, armed with a nerf blaster, he shot three nerf darts at her. On the tips of the darts, "GF?" was written in sharpie. She happily said yes.

After spending much of 2020 together in quarantine, Nathan felt prepared to ask Hannah to marry him. One day when casually browsing Etsy for engagement rings (as one does), Hannah came across a ring that brought her tears. Instantly in love with it, she sent Nate the link saying "I really love this one when you are ready, no pressure." He bought it the next day. Fast forward to December 2020, Hannah was suspicious that the moment was near, but she was unaware of Nathan's plans. On New Years Eve, the two had plans to get dinner with some friends (or so she thought). Behind the scenes, a full plan (Operation P.L.A.N.), created by Nathan and complete with an instructional PowerPoint presentation and code names, was about to unfold. After getting ready together at Nathan's mother's house, they received a call from Nathan's cousin (and best man), Manual, who explained that his car had broke down on the way to a party and he now needed to be picked up at the local park. They set off to rescue him and Hannah texted her friend (and bridesmaid) Elaina, saying she thought she was wrong about her theory that Nate was going to propose. Two minutes later, they walked to a small white Christmas tree in the park to look at an ornament that Manual wanted to show them. When Hannah looked over to see if Nate had found the ornament, he was down on one knee. He asked, "Will you marry me?" and she said "Of course I will." She then dropped to the ground and the two hugged and cried together before Manual instructed Hannah to turn around. She turned to see their friends and family members, who had been waiting around the corner, walking towards them. They all celebrated together with a dinner at Friendly's. It was a magical night that they will never forget.
