Driving from the Chicagoland area?

The fastest way to drive up to Red Wing from the Chicago area is taking I-88W to I-90W. 90 will take you all the way through Wisconsin (Beloit --> Madison --> The Dells --> La Crosse). Once you cross the Mississippi after leaving La Crosse, you'll be in Minnesota and follow US-61N up along The River to Red Wing! The drive is about 5.5 hours with no stops. The stops we've used when traveling to/from WI/IL; Janesville restaurants or Kwik Trip, Wisconsin Dells Mobile gas station (has Dunkin attached) off of Wisconsin Dells Parkway right by Kalahari, La Crosse/Onalaska Kwik Trips, any Kwik Trip in Minnesota.

Driving from the MKE/Madison area?

The fastest way to drive up to Red Wing from the Milwaukee area is taking I-94W to Madison then getting on to I-90W towards The Dells until you reach the fork near Tomah. You'll then get back on I-94W towards Eau Claire until Osseo where you will exit onto US-10W to Red Wing. The drive is about 4.75 hours without stops. Sun Prairie, The Dells, and Tomah all have Kwik Trips that we have stopped at if needed and felt safe.
