"How much does a polar bear weigh? "Enough to break the ice. Hi, I'm Devin." That was Devin's first message to Lex after we matched on Tinder in June 2014. We quickly learned how much we had in common: European history, a good cup of coffee, Seth Rogan movies, neat whisky, dogs, spirited political debates. And for a few weeks before we committed to meeting, we'd chat on the phone every night from the time work ended until bed.

Unlike quintessentially bad first dates, ours was totally us. We grabbed some coffee at Green Street Coffee in Midtown. We played a game of chess—Lex won, but Devin claims he let that happen—and shared many laughs and wonderful conversation. When the cups were empty and both of us were fixing to leave, Devin suggested a walk. We went down Spruce Street through Washington Square Park—where, nearly four years later, Devin would pop the question!—and wandered into Old City. We agreed on a beer and a game of pool, and found ourselves at Buffalo Billiards, still laughing and having a fantastic evening.

Since we signed the lease on our South Philly home in August 2016, we've have had a little tradition: Throughout the years, we record short videos to our future selves documenting the prior year and any big life changes. On March 24, 2018, we were wandering through the city when Devin suggested another video. As we told jokes and recorded some updates, Devin managed to steer us toward Washington Square Park—both a spot at our first date and a park Lex walks through every day to work. Devin steered us toward the fountain as he reflected on our last four years together. In the center of the park, still on camera, he got down on one knee and popped the Q!
