About: The Caroni Swamp and Bird Sanctuary is the natural nesting home of the Scarlet Ibis bird, one of the national birds of Trinidad and Tobago. The major attraction at this mangrove is the opportunity to observe, close to sunset, the ritualistic roosting habits of thousands of these bright red birds. The mangrove trees provide nesting places for the migratory birds, making it perfect for birdwatchers. Flat-bottom boats conduct regular tours through the mangrove. The Caroni Swamp is the largest mangrove wetland in Trinidad.

On weekends and week day afternoons, the Savannah comes to life and is the destination for sports enthusiasts, health fanatics, joggers, family picnics, strolling couples and persons seeking to indulge in the sumptuous local street food served by vendors. The Savannah is surrounded by many interesting attractions, including the Hollows, the Botanic Gardens, the Magnificent Seven and the Emperor Valley Zoo. The Royal Botanic gardens houses 700 hundred trees of which thirteen percent (13%) are indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago while the other trees and plants represent all the other continents of the world. The Gardens, which were established in 1818, are situated just north of the Queen’s Park Savannah. The landscaped site occupies 61. 8 acres (25 hectares) and is known as one of the oldest Botanic Gardens in the world. Walking distance from Kapok Hotel The Gardens are open from 6am - 6pm everyday. Along the west side of the Queen’s Park Savannah on Maraval Rd are the Magnificent Seven, a line of eccentric and ornate colonial buildings constructed in the early 20th century. From south to north, they are Queen’s Royal College; Hayes Court; Mille Fleurs; Roomor; the Catholic Archbishop’s Residence; White Hall; and Stollmeyer’s Castle.
The Emperor Valley Zoo is the main zoo in Trinidad and Tobago, located north of the Queen’s Park Savannah and west of the Botanic Gardens in Port of Spain. It is also the only zoo in the Caribbean to house Lions, Giraffes, an entertaining Giant Otter and a 30 year old 12 foot Crocodile. The zoo is open from 9am - 6pm.
