Joanna and Ted met the old-fashioned way (on the internet!) in December 2018. They started chatting a few days before Christmas and went on their first date on December 27—which started at Adam’s Morgan bar Green Zone and ended with a scenic stroll through Zoo Lights. Ted thought it would be a good idea to take Joanna to the absurdist comedy show, the Elvis Birthday Fight Club on their second date (with special appearances from naked Abraham Lincolns and Jeff Bezos impersonators), and was surprised she was still interested in a third date.
That summer, they went on their first trip together to Richmond and enjoyed both of their passions – for biking and breweries (Joanna’s) and vintage shopping (Ted’s). They knew it was serious when Joanna’s father gifted Ted some bike lube on his first trip to meet her parents. As life turned upside down during the pandemic, Joanna and Ted adopted a rescue dog together and Joanna moved into Ted’s studio apartment. While they worked five feet apart from each other as the world outside shut down, they realized their relationship could go the distance.
A few days before Memorial Day, Joanna was getting a massage after work. When she got out of the massage appointment, she had a text from Ted – Meet Mysa and me at the park? Joanna walked a few blocks to Walter Pierce Park, a park they and Mysa love, near their first apartment together. Ted was standing in the middle of the park and Mysa was sitting next to him chewing on a stick. As Joanna walked closer, she noticed Mysa was wearing a doggie backpack. As Joanna bent down to pet Mysa and look at the backpack, Ted said “she’s carrying something important in her backpack.” Joanna opened the backpack to find a box containing the ring they designed together. Ted got down on one knee. “Will you marry me?” he asked.
