We met in the summer after our junior year of college at Appalachian State University. We both worked as RA's for a college-access program called Upward Bound. Matthew asked Carly out to see the movie, Incredibles 2. Carly invited the rest of the staff to come along as she didn't want anyone to feel out, so most of the staff were there on our first date. After the movie, we cruised the parkway in Matthew's Jeep. As we were driving with doors off, Matthew slowed down since a deer was standing on the side of the road. We stopped so that Carly could talk to the deer. When it moved, Carly screamed as she thought it was coming in the Jeep. Matthew frequently laughs at this memory. We ended the night by listening to music (which Matthew quickly made a playlist for Carly later), and stargazing at the Yadkin Valley overlook.
