This traditional Nigerian (specifically Yoruba) wedding ceremony begins with the joyful entrance of the families of the bride and groom, symbolizing unity and mutual respect. The groom's family formally presents a proposal letter requesting the bride's hand in marriage, which is then accepted through a response from the bride's family. Then the groom dances in with his family and friends followed by the bride's grand entrance in vibrant attires. A key moment is the "idobale", where the groom and his groomsmen prostrate before the bride's family as a sign of respect and humility. The ceremony also includes symbolic gestures of marital commitment such as placing of the cap (fila) and the presentation of gifts (eru iyawo) from the groom's family. Throughout the celebration, there is food, music, dancing, and "spraying" to create a lively and festive atmosphere.
Spraying is celebratory tradition where guests place money on the couple (or gently toss it in the air near them) while they dance. It's a way of showing love and offering blessings for prosperity in their marriage. Guests are welcome to bring cash or dollar bills if they'd like to participate, but it's completely optional.
