Want to see Oregon’s roaring rivers, waterfalls, and old-growth forests? Take a stroll on the waterfall loop around the McKenzie River’s two grandest cascades. Accessible within a few minutes from the parking lot, the additional 2.6-mile loop hike starts at 100-foot-tall Sahalie Falls, a raging cataract that pounds the river into a rainbowed mist. Then the loop descends past 70-foot Koosah Falls and returns on the river’s far shore through forests of 6-foot-thick Douglas fir and droopy-limbed red cedar.
Cougar Hot Springs is a fantastic place to soak away anxiety and stress that you may have brought with you from the city. It is also a great place to relax after a long hike, mountain bike ride or a day of skiing at Hoodoo. The hot springs emerge from a small cave (you can climb into it) and flows out into 5 cascading pools. As the water flows down into the lower pools the temperature gets a little cooler.
The Upper McKenzie River is a one of a kind, in the Cascades. The upper river is primarily supplied with water from springs and aquifers. Most of the water in the McKenzie has been underground for up to 7 years, thus offering water year-round regardless of snowpack and rain. Horse Creek Outfitters and High Country Expeditions are great for setting up tours. We are considering setting up a group trip Friday morning depending on who's interested and what the weather is looking like! If you'd be interested let us know.
The Pacific Crest Trail spans 2,650 miles (4,265 kilometers) from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon, and Washington. The trail symbolizes everything there is to love—and protect—in the Western United States. Untold thousands of hikers and equestrians enjoy this international treasure each year. Loloma Lodge is situated near the Pacific Crest Trail and is a great launchpad for a short or long hike.
