The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial pre-eminence in turn-of-the-century America. Tour this historic home that is next to Salve Regina University, the college Tate (and her siblings) attended.
There are nearly 3 miles of walking trails on the waterfront around Sachuest Point National Wildlife Preserve. The ocean vistas are so pretty that you never realize how far you've walked! This is where Brad proposed to Tate on November 30, 2018.
Newport's enchanting 3.5 mile Cliff Walk is the perfect place for your moment of peace. Experience panoramic crashing waves and sea breezes on one side and view stunning century-old, Gilded-Age mansions on the other. This is heaven on Earth. Park along Easton's Beach on Memorial Avenue and walk down to the Breakers. Then for a different view, walk the parallel (famous) street, Bellevue Ave back to the car!
This scenic drive, also known as Ten Mile Drive (or just "The Drive" to locals), encompasses most of the southern coastline of Aquidneck Island. This area used to be farmland, but today is one of the most popular Newport attractions. Once you're out here, it's very easy to see why. This drive will take you to our wedding venue at Castle Hill Inn.
A great breakfast spot with the dogs - don't be fooled by the industrial shipyard - one of the busiest on the easy coast! Follow the checkerboard pavement to Belle's cafe and sit by the yachts that casually roll in and out of Newport.
Brad & Tate love to go here and share the nachos, tacos, and margaritas. If you're in the mood for Mexican, this is your spot. It is located in Bowen's Wharf so you will have to park and walk. Parking can be tricky here but you can park across the road along Thames Street, or pay in one of the adjacent private lots.
For the best pastries that we have had since Paris, try Picnic Cafe. Located across from the Viking Hotel, this is our go-to spot for an afternoon pick-me-up! Say hi to John, the owner, he will take great care of you. If they have the black cherry & walnut turnover, make sure you get one for the road!
Great shopping on upper and lower Thames. This is where the hub of Newport is. Shops parallel America's Cup Ave and extend down towards lower Thames. Hint: Park near the post office on the side street (hidden meter parking there)!
