During the spring of 2021, back when online dating still provided a modicum of hope, Tammy and Tuling matched in SF, not knowing that they lived a mere 6 blocks away from each other. Their first date started at Boba Guys in Potrero Hill, but instead of drinking boba, they walked and talked towards Dolores Park and back. After over half a year of walking and talking as friends (Tuling liked to take his time), Tammy shared her plans of moving to LA. Faced with the possibility of losing her, Tuling began picturing a world where they wouldn't be running along Embarcadero Pier anymore, playing Pump It Up at Round1, and eating takeout in his car while waiting for it to charge...and he didn't like it. A few weeks before the official move date, Tammy dropped Tuling off at the airport for a trip he had planned to Canada. Right before leaving, he pulled out a vase that he had made from his pottery class. A gift to make things official. Unfortunately Tammy initially took it as a platonic gift and didn't notice the details around it. The heart shaped mouth at the top. The carving of a flower from one of their first dates. The handwritten letter stuck inside. She eventually read the contents of the letter and messaged him the good news, but not before making him sweat the whole time waiting for a response.
Over the next several years, Tuling would periodically fly between SF and LA before eventually moving down to LA. It was during this time that Tuling faced the toughest part of being in a relationship, learning to coexist with the other guy in Tammy's life, Momo. As they vied for her attention, they eventually learned to tolerate each other as everyone carved out their own routine; Tammy focused on becoming a career woman, Tuling learned to become a student again, and Momo napped as much as he could under the sun. After braving the 405 traffic for several years together, Tammy and Tuling moved back to the Bay Area to talk about next steps.
Right from the beginning, Tuling knew the perfect place to pop the question, Round1 of Hayward. While an arcade connected to a dying mall with private security at night seemed antithesis to the typical fairytale setting, it always felt like the right answer. Under the pretense of introducing Round1 to her family members, Tuling and Tammy paid their weekly respects one Sunday morning along with some visiting family. While showcasing their coordination on Pump It Up (aka Korean version of DDR), Tammy was unaware that additional family and friends were hiding nearby. Tammy's sister handed Tuling a flower bouquet during the middle of one of the songs (Tammy was too focused on the screen to notice), which he then used to propose at the end of the song. Needless to say, Tammy was left almost speechless, with just enough air to breathe yes.
