Great beach to sunbathe or walk the shoreline for Petoskey Stones. Petoskey stones are fossilized prehistoric coral (Hexagonaria percarinata) that lived in warm, shallow seas around Michigan about 350 million years ago. Famous for their distinct, tightly packed six-sided patterns that resemble "eyes" or a sunburst, they were named after the Ottawa Chief Pe-to-se-ga, meaning "rising sun" They are a local treasure and can be found along Lake Michigan. You can also rent a kayak to explore the beachfront.
