Flight
We recommend flying into Guanajuato International Airport. It is located in the municipality of Silao in the state of Guanajuato. It is about half an hour from the center of the city of Guanajuato. When searching for flights, you can use the airport code BJX. If you are searching by destination, you can search Guanajuato or Leon to bring up BJX.
Travel Note
Guanajuato city center is about 30 minutes from the airport. You have a couple of transportation options: Taxi: The easiest option. Taxis are paid for at the taxi counter in the airport and cost about $25 USD (do NOT hail your own cab from the curb). Hotels can help arrange for taxis back to the airport. Car Rental: There are car rental options at the airport; however, we do not recommend this. Guanajuato city center is off-limits to cars and it's not a car-friendly city if you're new in town. Streets are narrow and use confusing tunnel systems. Additionally, parking is severely limited. If you choose this option, the toll road into the city is 33 pesos (exact change not necessary). Hotel Shuttle: Contact your hotel to see if they offer this service and when it runs. Bus: Cheap, but requires transportation to and from the bus depot outside of town. Not recommended.

For our San Diego-based guests, flying out of Tijuana International Airport via CBX may offer a tempting alternative to leaving from San Diego International Airport. In our experience, tickets tend to be cheaper and have more direct flight options since the flights are domestic rather than international. For those of you who are hearing about CBX for the first time, it is basically a border crossing exclusively for ticketed airline passengers flying in or out of Tijuana International Airport. The crossing takes you right into Tijuana International Airport, and if you opt for an airline that offers check-in on the U.S. side, you will be dropped off directly into the terminal after clearing security (otherwise you have to check in in Mexico). Passengers can add the CBX border-crossing to some flight purchases OR they can buy flight tickets and CBX tickets separately ($32 to $34 roundtrip). Tijuana airport code is TJX or TIJ; some airlines use TJX exclusively for CBX linked flights.

For San Diego (or LA) guests choosing to fly out of Tijuana International Airport using CBX, you can use any carrier that operates out of Tijuana Airport, but we recommend Viva Aerobus, Volaris (bit less reliable but more flights), or AeroMexico (with caveats; see luggage bit below) since these airlines have check-in counters and/or kiosks at CBX on the U.S. side. Ideally, you will be able to check in online, but not all carriers offer this service, so checking in at CBX before reaching the airport is the next best thing as this allows you to go directly to the terminal after clearing customs and immigration and skip the long lines for check-in on the Mexico side (been there, done that). Please note, if you are checking luggage, you will need to carry your luggage across the border. Volaris and Viva Aerobus have a luggage drop-off area for CBX customers directly after customs. AeroMexico and Interjet require you to go to the Mexican-side check-in counters, which can be time consuming.
Travel Note
Some of the airlines that fly out of Tijuana have different prices depending on whether you view the website in English or Spanish: English = gringo prices; Spanish = 10% - 20% discount. Volaris seems to be consist across both languages, but we definitely encountered gringo prices using VivaAerobus. If you want to shop for a deal and don't read Spanish or don't feel comfortable using Google translate to buy flights, find a friend who does, give 'em beer to help you out, and check out the difference. We are also available to provide Spanish translation help for flights. Understanding luggage costs is also important: Volaris flights only include a personal item (briefcase/purse) with the ticket; carry-on and checked bags are extra ($20 -$50). VivaAerobus includes both carry-on and checked bags in the ticket price. With any airline, be prepared to pay an extra $85 -$90 USD for airport tax. You can pay this at the airport, but it's easier to just purchase it with the ticket.
Travel Note
Currently (as of May) there are NO restrictions on air travel into Mexico. There are also NO COVID-19 testing requirements to enter Mexico. For our San Diego guests choosing to fly out of Tijuana Airport using CBX border crossing, you also qualify as "air travel" and will not be required to provide documentation of essential travel.
Travel Note
Currently (as of May) the U.S. is requiring all air passengers 2 or older entering the U.S. (including citizens and permanent residents) to provide a negative COVID-19 test taken within 3 calendar days of departure (please see the link for more information from the CDC). For our international guests traveling from locations outside of the U.S., we highly recommend checking if your governments are requiring any testing or other precautions before booking your flights. Guanajuato International Airport provides testing at the airport. Price for international travelers is about $22 USD for an antigen test or $72 USD for a PCR test - either of which will satisfy the requirements. Our understanding is that passengers should budget about 30 extra minutes at the airport for the test and that the results arrive on your phone within an hour. Some hotels in Guanajuato also provide testing. For our San Diego guests traveling via Tijuana Airport using CBX, you are NOT required to test.

An old mansion turned boutique hotel, Antiguo Vapor has a wonderful contemporary Mexican style. The stay includes free parking, complementary breakfast, and English-speaking staff and website. Some rooms even have jacuzzis tubs. This hotel is still centrally located (only 8 minutes walk from the main plaza), but is a little more on the outskirts of downtown and may be a good option for guests seeking a slightly more tranquil location.

There are plenty of other great stay options (including AirB&Bs) in Guanajuato if none of the above tickle your fancy. While the wedding is in the suburb of Marfil, we are providing shuttle service to and from the ceremony/reception on Saturday and highly recommend that you stay in the city center.
Travel Note
We want your trip to Mexico to be exciting (for all the right reasons), and we take your safety very seriously. Currently, the US State Department lists Guanajuato state at level 2 travel advisory, "Exercise Increased Caution." This is one step above "Exercise Normal Caution" and is currently the lowest level of caution issued for any location worldwide. The safety warning for Guanajuato is due to gang-related violence in the south of the state, which is far from Guanajuato City. For perspective, Italy has similar travel warnings in place due to terrorist attack potential. Talia's parents have lived in Guanajuato since 2019 and travel regularly throughout the area. Furthermore, Guanajuato relies heavily on tourism and is invested in making their city safe and clean. Please exercise common sense (no dark alleyways) and check with the concierge at your hotel before going for runs/hikes outside the city center. See FAQ for COVID concerns.
