Things to Do in Morocco

Rabat

Rabat, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Morocco

Rabat is the capital of Morocco and is known for its historic and cultural sites such as Hassan Tower, Chellah, and Kasbah des Oudayas. The Oudayas is known for its enchanting garden, souq (street market), port, and beach. You can take a 10-20 minute calm boat ride from the Oudayas to the town of Sale. We recommend spending 3-4 days in Rabat. Restaurant recs: Dar Naji (authentic Moroccan food with a view of the beach), Restaurant Ziryab (authentic Moroccan food in a riad), Souissi (best bakery in town), Dar El Karam Fatima (casual restaurant in Kasbah of the Oudayas with a beautiful view).

Marrakesh

Marrakesh, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco

A vibrant city surrounded by the Atlas Mountains. We recommend spending 2-3 days here. Marrakesh is famous for its central square and market place, Jemaa el-Fnaa, in the Medina quarter. The city is also known for its historic monuments: Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace, Koutoubia, etc. If you are interested in taking a day-long excursion trip from Marrakech, there are many travel vendors at Jemaa el-Fnaa; however, we recommend booking online in advance. Excursions include hiking in the Atlas Mountains, driving ATVs/riding camels in the desert (not the Sahara - longer trip), Essaouira (coastal city popular for surfing). 2-3 day excursions from Marrakesh include a variety of guided trips through beautiful small towns with the end destination of an overnight stay in the Sahara. Restaurant recs: Chez Lamine Hadj Mustapha (cooks lamb underground, ~120 years old), Zeitoun Café (casual rooftop restaurant), Kif Kif (traditional moroccan cuisine, view of the old city & the mountains).

Casablanca

Casablanca, Casablanca-Settat, Morocco

Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco and is known for its Moorish architecture by the water. We recommend staying in the city for 1-2 days. The main sites, such as the renowned Hassan II Mosque, can be seen in just a few hours, but there is much to do if you plan on staying longer. Restaurant recs: Umayya Corniche, 94 (seafood restaurant with an incredible ocean view), Dar Dada (traditional Moroccan cuisine with orchestra performance in the evening), Room21 (cute little cafe with amazing kunafe ice cream).

Tangier

Tangier, Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima, Morocco

Tangier is a coastal city where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. You can see the two shades of blue waters meet at the top of Cape Spartel. At night the lights of Spain, just a 30-minute ferry ride away, sparkle. The city is known for its fried seafood and cafes by the water.
