The Valley is home to the endangered `alae `ula (Hawaiian moorhen), and special precautions must be observed at all times to prevent any injury to them. To protect this precious bird we require all vehicles stop when within 8 feet of an ‘alae‘ula. You are required to stop and wait for the ‘alae‘ula to move or you can exit the vehicle and gently shoo it off of the road. This rule must be strictly followed. State law includes a sizeable fine for harm or killing of this bird. Please do no feed, approach, or leave objects that could cause harm to these birds!
