The rituals are performed consecutively during the wedding ceremony with the help of Sponsors. The order is as follows: Lighting of the Candle; Draping of the Veil and Cord; Removal of the Veil and Cord; and, finally, Exchanging of Coins.
There are 8 sponsors in total (2 for each ritual). Generally speaking, a couple-to-be can choose anyone to be their sponsors. We have chosen 8 relatives from both sides of our families.
There are two candles, one on each side of the couple, which are brought forth by the Sponsors. The couple takes each candle and lights a third candle. This represents "new light" and the commitment of two to keep it ablaze.
The Veil represents unity, while the Cord symbolizes infinity, ultimately signifying everlasting love, support, trust, and respect. The Veil sponsors drape the veil over the couple, while the Cord sponsors loop the cord over them.
Coins represent prosperity in the couple's life going forward. Moreover, the couple exchanges coins with each other, symbolizing a sharing of wealth and a pledge of mutual support.
