Nearby airports, hotels and other stay arrangement options, and some general information on how to get around while visiting DC. Please do NOT rent a car while you are here unless you: enjoy never finding a parking spot, love the feeling of frustration when streets close at a moment's notice because some important government official is out getting bagels, or you generally love dealing with bad drivers (or are one).

Train

DC Metro

The DC Metro system is going to be the easiest way to get around the city while you are here! The fares will typically range from $2 - $4 per ride, depending on entry / exit points and the time of day. To use the Metro, you will need to purchase a SmarTrip card and fill it with money, which costs $2 plus the amount you would like to load. You can do this at any Metro station. And most importantly: Stand on the right, walk on the left!

Flight

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

Reagan is definitely the most convenient airport to fly into, but it is probably not going to be the least expensive. Situated just a few miles from the city center, a metro line runs straight through the airport - if you wanted to avoid ride shares.

Flight

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport

About a 40 minute drive from downtown DC, the BWI airport is probably the least expensive flight option. Securing an Uber or Lyft will average you about $50, but if you want to take a more leisurely (and cheap) path into the city, you can board the MARC train which will bring you right into Union Station in downtown DC. Flight

Dulles International Airport

Just.... Don't.

House Or Rental

airbnb

If the hotel scene isn't for you, there are so many options for home rentals in DC - everything from quaint studio basements in Capitol Hill, to swanky apartments in Penn Quarter. We live in the Navy Yard / Capitol Hill area and it is wonderful, but each neighborhood in DC has a distinct vibe. Prices range from $115 a night to $$$$.

For all the days along the way
