Seward is a great town on the east side of the Kenai peninsula. It is about 90 miles south of Girdwood and can be accessed via the Alaska railroad or by car. It is a launching spot of the Kenai Fjords National Park or whale watching tours. We spent a few days in Seward and saw sea otters, sea lions, and eagles just walking around town. There are some nice hikes in the area and the Mt. Marathon Race takes place on July 4th. If you’re still in the area, it’s definitely something to check out.
Homer is the halibut capital of the world. This small town is located on the west side of the Kenai peninsula and is about 190 miles from Girdwood. There are so many wonderful day trips that can launch from Homer including island hikes, halibut fishing charters, and kayak tours. The Homer spit is worth a walk and a fish and chips lunch.
The largest city in Alaska sandwiched between the Chugach mountains and the ocean. Plenty of places for great food and shopping. We haven’t spent much time in Anchorage but some recommendations we’ve received for eating: Crow’s Nest and Captain Cook Hotel (360views and superb dining), King Street Brewery and 49th State Brewing Company, Moose’s Tooth Pizza, and Snow City Cafe (brunch, reservations recommended). Things to do: Anchorage Museum, Eagle River Nature Center, Flattop at Glen Alps (difficult hike but spectacular view), Kincaid Park, Tony Knowles Coastal Trail (11 miles of beautiful coastal trail), and gold panning at Turnagain View Lodge.
Home to the tallest mountain in North America, Denali National Park is approximately a five hour drive from Girdwood. The six million acre park has only one road, Denali Park Rd which private vehicles can only drive on for the first 15 miles. If you would like to go further into the park, you must use one of the bus services provided.
