It was Sus’ senior year at Rice University. She had one more required class to take for her theatre degree: Stagecraft. Stagecraft is the class where you learn how to build things, the names of all the tools (ever heard of ‘end nips’?), and how to paint a floor to *look* like it’s made of solid wood planks (Gus is really good at this last one). Gus was just starting his sophomore year, and he had been told that Stagecraft was an easy A, which given his insane tennis schedule, would be very welcome. It’s day one. Sus walks into Hamman Hall, Rice’s theatre, with all the usual comfort of a theatre kid entering a theatre in which she has spent many moons. She spots Gus. She turns to Annie, her best friend who is also signed up for Stagecraft, and says, “Who is that boy in my theatre?” Sure, she pegged him as a ‘Ryan’ and not a ‘Gustavo.’ Sure, she thought he might be lost given that he was wearing a ‘Rice Tennis’ shirt and had more muscles in his right calf than Sus and Annie combined. But then she caught a glimpse of his winning smile, and the rest, they say, is history. From Gus, Sus has developed an appreciation for all things tennis-related, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and red wines. From Sus, Gus attends the theatre now and again and knows more about Shakespeare than the average person should. Together, they love nights in, the idea of riding horses across the Scottish Highlands, Holocaust history and literature, traveling throughout Europe, watching way too many episodes of Criminal Minds, debating political theory, and ogling over dogs on the Internet. We are so excited to share our big day with all of you. ‘Til we meet again! xx, Sus + Gus P.S. Gus did not get an A in Stagecraft, a fact that Sus will never let him live down.
