Susan and Josh met the old-fashioned way: in person at Katy Trail Ice House and by being introduced by friends (a law school roommate of Josh and a fellow Teach for America corp member of Susan) yet without any intentions or expectations. There's no better evidence of the latter than Susan's attire: an over-sized sweatshirt, leggings, and no makeup. Their paths crossed again during a big group outing to go bowling, where Susan found Josh attractive but at the time wasn't interested due to his overly competitive nature. In March 2016, Josh found himself needing a date to SMU's "law prom" event at the end of the month. Long story short, he asked Susan. The two had a blast at law prom and continued to see each other after. By June 2016, after dates at a variety of bars and restaurants, a Rangers game, a Broadway musical, and a concert, Susan and Josh made things official.

When Josh's original proposal plan, which had been in the works for over three months, was derailed by COVID-19, he had to improvise. In a world of quarantining and shutdowns, Susan and Josh's apartment was the only realistic location for him to pop the question. Josh faked a stomach ache so Susan alone went to go pick up dinner from one of their favorite restaurants. While she was gone and with some help from friends, Josh set up the apartment with roses, candles, and champagne. When Susan returned, her first thought was, "Where'd he get these roses?" And then it dawned on her. According to Susan, after this brief thought, the rest was a blur - except, of course, the part where she said "Yes!" After toasting with champagne and enjoying a delicious dinner, Susan and Josh celebrated in true 2020 fashion: numerous Zoom video calls with family and friends to share the good news!
