The Latin Mass follows an ancient form of the liturgy that was codified in the 16th century. The Mass is prayed in Latin (readings and homily will be proclaimed in English), with great formality, solemnity and reverence. The vows will be exchanged before Mass starts, so the newlyweds will have their first Mass together as husband & wife. The Mass takes place “ad orientem:” the priest faces the altar with his back to the people and prays the prayers of the Mass on behalf of his people. He faces this way because he is facing the liturgical East; the significance is that Christ will come again from the East to judge the living and the dead, and the priest leads the people in joyful expectation of the Second Coming. There will also be books to help follow along. Many of the prayers are silent, so it is easy to fall behind or get confused. Our best advice is to watch, pray and absorb all that is happening and to allow yourself to be immersed in the beauty of the prayers and the liturgy.
The veil is essentially an external sign of a woman's interior desire to humble herself before God. It is also a sign of the great dignity inherent to women, who have the potential to receive life within themselves. There is no obligation to bring/ wear a veil, but you are very welcome to do so if you feel inclined!
Out of respect to Christ present in the Tabernacle, we kindly request the church's modesty guidelines be followed: For men: dress slacks/dress shirts, jacket/tie if desired. For ladies: knee length or longer dresses, skirts or dress pants. Tops should adequately cover shoulders, chest and back. Thank you for making the effort to dress with decorum, out of respect for God's house, and out of the consideration of the dignity of the human person.
There is a parking lot you can park at behind the church, though space is limited. Overflow cars will have to park in the KU Medical center parking lot, located a few blocks south of the church on Rainbow Blvd (a 2-3 min walk to the church).
Please see the Schedule page for a more detailed description of the events of the day. If you are headed to celebrate with us at the reception, note that it is a 2 hour 15 minute drive to the venue. We understand if you can only make it to either the ceremony or the reception. If you get to the reception site early, feel free to check out its surroundings-Lake of the Ozarks is only a 20 minute drive from the venue and always has a lively atmosphere to offer!
