In true Haley and Cody fashion, the couple met on a work trip. They were both attending Steamboat Institute's Freedom Conference in the gorgeous mountain setting of Beaver Creek, CO. Haley had just moved to Denver, CO, two weeks before, and in an effort to meet new people, and to network for work purposes, she had stayed up late to hang out with other conference attendees her age. Cody, ever the lover of a late night bourbon and cigar, was doing the same. They were both chatting with other people around a massive fire pit outside the hotel. The fire was big enough that there were 3 or 4 groups of people around it talking, so Haley and Cody didn't meet right away. The hotel had a wedding happening at the same time as the conference, and one of the wedding party members had joined the fire to see what the conference was all about. Of course, politics and policy came up. He was asking about guns and mentioned "clips," and Cody heard a girl chime in from across the fire "You mean a magazine?" It was Haley, and it was love at first sight.
Cody, Haley, and a few of their friends flew to Nashville, TN, for the weekend to celebrate Cody's 29th birthday. Cody and the rest of the group had gotten in early and had dinner together before heading to Broadway. Haley had taken a later flight and caught up with them in the line to get into Robert's Western World, Cody's favorite bar on Broadway. After a long night of the best country songs, some cheese curds, a couple Recession Specials (if you know, you know), and a few too many $2.50 Miller High Lifes, the group started walking back to the hotel. With arms around each other, under the lights of the Bridgestone Arena, Haley and Cody said "I love you" for the first time and made their relationship official. Their first outing as a couple was at the Johnny Cash museum, where Cody paid for Haley's ticket. It was the first of many incredible memories they would have as a couple. Cody and Haley were on the same flight back to Denver on Monday. They sat next to each other, and Cody fell asleep holding Haley's hand. She was smiling like a school girl the whole time.
Cody had suggested to Haley that they go to Broadway with some friends before they went out of town for a week on their vacation to Hawaii. Haley thought that sounded fun and mentioned it to their friend Kaitlyn, who said Friday worked well for her and her husband, Lukas. Little did Haley know, Kaitlyn and Lukas were in the on the plan, and knew Cody was going to propose Friday. Friday, April 28th, rolled around and Kaitlyn and Lukas picked up Cody and Haley to head to Assembly Food Hall, their favorite spot to get dinner before heading to Second Fiddle or Robert's. Kaitlyn and Lukas mentioned that they had to go to the store at Bridgestone Arena to get Lukas a new Predators shirt since Kaitlyn had shrunk his in the wash. A couple other friends met them at Assembly, and they all enjoyed dinner like normal before heading for the Arena. Once at Bridgestone, they realized there was an event so they wouldn't be able to get in. Giving up on the shirt, they turned to head towards Broadway. After a few steps, Haley turned around to find Cody down on one knee holding the ring. She screamed as if she had seen a spider, and proceeded to ask if the ring was real. Cody said, "Yes, will you marry me?" and all Haley could do was nod quickly before wrapping Cody in a hug. Turns out, Lukas needing a new shirt was just part of a beautiful plan to help Cody get Haley back to the spot where they had first said "I love you" two years before, and Haley, thinking Cody might propose in Hawaii, was totally unsuspecting.
