How We Met

SunShine's Take: Fall of 2015, I hurried to Phelps Stokes with friends, trying to make it in time for convocation. On the way, Guy and I were introduced by mutual friends. I promptly forgot ever meeting him, while he wondered if I had a boyfriend. Fast forward several months, our friend groups merged, and we began seeing a lot of each other. His gentleness and cheerful smile caught my eye, and we've known "we were it for each other" since. Guy's Take: On the way to one of many convocations, I was walking with a friend and some of his GSTR class. He introduced me to his acquaintances, although one of the only names I remembered was "SunShine." I joined them in the familiar quest for good seats, and, during the convo I daydreamed about the pretty girl that shared a name as uncommon as mine. I figured eventually that she must already have a boyfriend so I decided I wouldn't talk to her any further and fell asleep for the rest of the convocation. A few months later, my friend's girlfriend reintroduced me to the girl I had pushed to the back of my mind but never forgotten. As we began to see more of each other, I wondered if such an attractive and mysteriously kind girl would consider dating an awkward dummy like me. After walks and talks, I began to realize that SunShine was the only woman I wanted to spend my life with, and I began "making my moves."

Proposal

SunShine's Take: I rushed to Guy's apartment, frustrated with my car and guilty about accidentally charging his card for a meal sbuscription box. We planned to cook one of those non-refundable meals, and it was already late - we would be hangry-ly preparing dinner. I pounded on the door when Guy called out that I can just open it. When I walked in, his apartment was completely dark with the exception of candlelight. Tables adorned with flowers, candles, tokens of inside jokes, and love letters led me to his bedroom door. He was on one knee when I opened it. Now here I am, with the most beautiful ring on my finger, planning to commit the rest of my life to my favorite person and best friend. Guy's Take: My previous plans became impossible or wouldn't be what I wanted: driving her to Berea, using the snow covered Smoky Mountains for a backdrop, or proposing at a gas station as a nod to her favorite show, The Office. So before New Year's Eve, I hurriedly gathered supplies to beautify my apartment and to create a meal inspired by Noodle Nirvana's Spicy Lime Bowl. By the 30th, I was finally ready to put my plan into action. I created pedestals, organized candles, flowers, and decorations, made Spicy Lime broth and wrote letters that laid out the reasons I wanted her to say yes. Unfortunately she arrived before I was able to finish her meal, but I quickly turned out the lights, unlocked my front door, closed myself in my room and shouted for her to come in. As I nervously waited for her to read letters that I hoped would express my love and walk through a set up I hoped was beautiful, romantic and meaningful, I tried to rehearse what I would say when SunShine opened my door. In the end, I thought I had managed, "Will you marry me?" but apparently I just looked at her expectantly and confessed that I hadn't prepared a speech like I had wanted. Although I later had to confirm that she would have said yes, I'm now preparing to marry the woman I've always wanted to be with.
