City of Como is a romantic place, which gave its name to the lake. Como is easy to walk around, and its tourist attractions are within walking distance of the train station and boat landing. One of the best things to do to enjoy panorama is go up funicular to Brunate. From there are also a few hiking trails. If you prefer staying closer to the lake, enjoy the lakefront promenade and beautiful gardens of Villa Olmo. On a cultural side, Duomo of Como is one of the best cathedrals you can see in Lombardy. And as you stroll past little shops in city centre, you can't help notice the abundance of silk. Como has a long history as the center of Italy's silk manufacture, so it's a good place to do some shopping or visit the Silk Museum, where you can learn about the old textile tradition.
A must see on the lake ! Villa del Balbianello will leave you breathless, due to its beautiful terraced gardens and picturesque structure. Located on the tip of the Lavedo headland, in the locality of Lenno (Tremezzina), the villa provides a stunning view of Isola Comacina and the western shore of Lake Como. The unique location of Villa Balbianello allows visitors to get there only by foot (walking on a 1 km footpath which starts from Via degli Artigiani) or by a taxiboat that leaves from the Lenno beach. The villa was featured in a number of feature films, including Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.
The botanical gardens are fantastic and extensive, not mention the beautiful hotel. The Botanic Gardens are a part of the Hotel Villa Cipressi, a wonderful building on the lake which was built in the 1400s. The gardens are open to the public, whereas the rest of the building belongs to the hotel and its restaurant. The Botanic Garden is a century-old beauty which touches the lake and features several plants and flowers which nature lovers will adore. It is located on different tiers which overlook the waters in sublime ways.
The heart of Lake Como at the tip of the point, Bellagio is the town that is most popular on the lake. Full of shops, waterfront restaurants and buzzing with tourists, it's worth a visit if you have an extra day. We recommend driving a bit north and taking a short ferry from Cadenabbia.
