Andy and Hayley met through a mutual friend that Andy went to high school with. Hayley was an intern working for Congressman Dan Kildee and Andy's friend was his scheduler. She had invited Hayley to a Saginaw Spirit game the weekend of March 3rd in 2017 and mentioned to Hayley that her single friend from high school was invited as well. Hayley didn't know it at the time, but the mutual friend let Andy know that Hayley was an older intern and not a kid at 27. So, Andy knew it was sort of a set up for them. Hayley was completely clueless about this. At the hockey game that Saturday night, they sat together with another friend. Andy made the shrewd decision to buy two beers during a break in the game: one for him and, secretly, one for Hayley. When he came back to their seats he made up a story that it was "buy one get one free" and he offered the second beer to Hayley. She of course was impressed by his generosity but thought it was nothing beyond him just being nice. Later in the evening, that act of generosity also expanded to Andy fishing a hockey puck for Hayley out of the net surrounding the rink. It became more clear to Hayley that this guy was being more than nice. Later that evening, back at the friends home, Andy, Hayley, and the friend's husband spent several hours talking politics and the recent presidential election. She was immediately impressed by his love of Bernie Sanders and the fact that he was a Democrat. From that point on, neither Hayley nor Andrew could stop thinking about the other person, and by the day after St. Patrick's day later that month, they were going on their first date. They have been crazy about each other ever since, now 8 years later.
