House Or Rental

Deciding where to stay

This guide is packed with everything you need to know about where to stay in Rome! Just click the "View" button below to access all the information on where to stay. Whether you're considering a hotel or an Airbnb/VRBO, we've broken down the best areas to help you choose the perfect location for your visit. (hotel recommendations also below!) Note: Housing in Italy can be quite different from what you might expect in the U.S. When exploring hotel or house share options, be sure to read reviews carefully, confirm that places have air conditioning (especially since we'll be entering the hot months), and check for extras like early or late check-in/out.

Flight

Direct & Connecting Flights

Thanks to Rome’s popularity, there are plenty of flight options available. If you're flying from major U.S. cities like Atlanta or New York, you can take advantage of direct flights that get you there in 10 hours or less. If you're departing from a smaller city, we recommend connecting through a U.S. hub and then taking a direct international flight to Rome. This allows you to clear customs once you arrive in Italy, avoiding the hassle of going through customs during a European layover—making your journey quicker and more seamless.

Rental Car

Getting Around Rome

Trust us—renting a car in Rome just isn’t worth it. Traffic is chaotic, parking is a nightmare, and you'll have to pay a fee just to enter the city center. While Rome does have a metro system, it’s limited and not especially useful for getting around the historic core, where most of the main sights are. Instead, use taxis or ride-sharing apps. For a budget-friendly option, try taxi apps like FreeNow or IT Taxi. Prefer a licensed driver? Uber works well in Rome and even lets you hail a regular cab through the app. Just be sure to switch your payment method to Euros to avoid any unexpected conversion fees. There’s a flat-rate taxi fare from Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to anywhere in central Rome. Just follow the official taxi signs to the designated airport taxi stand—there will be staff available to help you get into an authorized cab. Always take a licensed white taxi with a taxi sign on top to ensure you get the fixed fare. If you're traveling with a larger group or want a private driver, reach out to Brianna to book a reliable transfer. Planning to travel outside of Rome before or after the wedding? Italy’s train system is fast, reliable, and incredibly scenic. Rome has two major train stations, with Roma Termini being the main hub—offering high-speed connections to cities all across the country, including Florence, Venice, Naples, and Milan. It’s one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to explore more of Italy without the stress of driving.

Travel Note

Common Italian Words to Know

Ciao - (informal) hello/ goodbye Salve - (formal) hello Bongiorno - good morning/ good day/ hello (typical to say when you enter a cafe/restaurant/ shop) Buona sera - good evening/ hello (used the same as "bongiorno" but after 5pm or so) Arrivederci - see you later/ until we meet again (more formal goodbye) Grazie - thank you Grazie mille - thank you very much Prego - please/ you're welcome/ after you (this has many meanings & you'll hear it a lot)

Travel Note

Currency & Cash

Italy uses the Euro (€), the standard currency across much of Europe. Most places in Rome accept Visa and Mastercard, and many even take American Express—though it’s less widely accepted, so don’t rely on it. You’ll be totally fine using a Visa or Mastercard for restaurants, shops, and transportation. That said, it’s a smart idea to carry a small amount of euros in cash. They can come in handy for things like taxis that don’t accept cards, small cafés or markets, tipping, public restrooms, or when visiting more local or off-the-beaten-path spots. You can easily withdraw euros from ATMs once you arrive (or order from your bank before you go)—just use a bank-affiliated ATM for the best rates. Avoid currency exchange kiosks, especially in airports or touristy areas, as they often have poor exchange rates and high fees.
