We met at Navy Pier on a hot summer day during the busy 4th of July weekend. I was working hard, making freshly spun cotton candy when Jeff approached the service counter with LL Cool J swagger. He asked if I had any blue cotton candy. I turned around and laughed as I pointed out the wall full of pink cotton candy. I explained to him that we only had pink, but every color tasted the same. After all, it was just sugar. He asked me, "What do I look like walking around with a pink cotton candy?!" We both laughed and immediately locked eyes. In our minds, the fireworks had already started. Little did we know, we would be best friends madly in love nearly 15 years later.
It was the night before Jeff's birthday, and we were scheduled to catch a 6am flight to Mexico. He insisted on jumpstarting his birthday celebration with a rooftop dinner in Chicago. In the uber home, Jeff pretended to have forgotten his credit card at the restaurant. I was not happy since I was so exhausted and our ride to the airport would be arriving in just 2 hours. We jumped in our own car to head back to the restaurant. I had a bad attitude and was ignoring Jeff as he serenaded me with Wale's song "Matrimony." Suddenly, he said he was not feeling well and made a sharp left turn to pull over. He got out the car and started pacing. I thought he was going to vomit, so I handed him a plastic bag. He asked me to come with him to "walk it off." Unwillingly, I joined him. We walked up some stairs that led to a cute garden by the river. As Jeff commented on the scenery, I impatiently asked him if he was feeling better. I was focusing on the hundreds of spiders along the rails, when I turned around and saw Jeff on one knee. At 2am, by the Chicago river, Jeff proposed to me. Part of me was wondering if it was real, and the other part was wondering why he wouldn't do this on a beach in Mexico during the sunset lol. Delirious, I asked him, "Now? You're doing this right now??" He replied, "I didn't want to go on another vacation with you as my girlfriend." With a huge smile on my face, I said "YES!" I was so besides myself that I gave him the wrong hand lol. We were engaged!
