How We Met

Sophmore Year

How we met wasn't romantic. It wasn't pretty or something out of a storybook. It certainly wasn't a fairy tale. What it WAS, was two college kids falling in love. It was fast and quick, and far succeeding the first time we had met on campus, in our first classes as freshmen. It was evident within moments that our similarities and our mutual friends acted as a catalyst for our favorite love story. Not to be verbose, but really. It wasn't pretty. Early hangouts were at house parties near campus and post midnight dinners at Minella's Diner. There's a rumor that our first outing as a couple debuted a drawn on lower back tattoo in the shape of a taco on one of us. Beyond the glories of dating in college, a shiny glow shown over us in the form of strange life coincidence and some SERIOUSLY bizarre seven degrees of separation that kept us up to ungodly hours discussing how unfathomable it was that we had only just then met.

The Engagement

Steph's Side

Karl had never surprised me one single time in our three and a half years of being together. Not for my "surprise" 21st birthday, not for any Christmas gifts, not for anything. Obviously I love him, but his poker face and prying questions tend to give him away well before his plans. So when Karl woke me up at 3:00am while on vacation in Maine. My only thoughts were "No". I couldn't figure out why anyone would want to wake up at such a miserable hour to go see the earth turn the same way it does every morning. Reluctantly I crawled into the car and refused to speak in more than just grunts as we ascended the mountain where the sun first hits on the east coast. Sensing my obvious displeasure, we crept back down the mountain soon after the sun peeked out to go check out another location. We were lead by the trail out of the woods, and onto a cliff ledge overlooking the crisp Atlantic ocean and the sun peeking up, I again thought to myself "no". I turned to ask Karl if I could go back to bed yet and was greeted with a camera pointed towards me and Karl getting down on one knee. After saying "of course" and whining about doing this while I was in such a foul mood, I made a realization. For the first time in our relationship, Karl had succeeded in surprising me.
