GREEK TRADITIONS - ΠΑΡΑΔΟΣΕΙΣ
1. Shooting for love...
1. ΠΥΡΟΒΟΛΙΣΜΟΙ ΓΙΑ ΓΟΥΡΙ...
Before the wedding, close family and friends of the bride and groom gather at their house and the men shoot in the air with shotguns for luck. Πριν την τελετή, οι στενοί συγγενείς και φίλοι του γαμπρού και της νύφης μαζεύονται στο σπίτι τους και ρίχνουν στον αέρα με την καραμπίνα.
2. Names under bride's shoe...
2. ΟΝΟΜΑΤΑ ΚΑΤΩ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΓΟΒΑ...
The bride writes the single girls' names under her shoe. It is believed that the names that get erased after the ceremony will get married next. Η νύφη γράφει τα ονόματα των ελεύθερων κοριτσιών κάτω απο το παπούτσι της. Πιστεύεται ότι οι κοπέλες των οποίων τα ονόματα σβήνονται μετά την τελετή θα παντρευτούν σύντομα.
3. Shaving the groom...
3. ΞΥΡΙΣΜΑ ΤΟΥ ΓΑΜΠΡΟΥ...
At the groom's house, his close friends put shaving cream all over his face and shave him while laughing and having fun. Στο σπίτι του γαμπρού οι φίλοι του, του βάζουν αφρό ξυρίσματος στο πρόσωπο και τον ξυρίζουν καθώς γελούν και διασκεδάζουν.
4. Pre-wedding melodies...
4. ΤΟ ΜΑΡΣ...
At the groom's and bride's house there is a violinist that plays some traditional pre-wedding melodies for them while they are preparing. These songs are called "Mars" and do not refer to the neighboring planet. Στο σπίτι του γαμπρού και της νύφης υπάρχουν οργανοπαίχτες που παίζουν παραδοσιακές πατινάδες την ώρα που ετοιμάζονται "το μαρς του γαμπρού" και "το μαρς της νύφης".
5. The groom waits...
5. ΤΟ ΣΤΗΣΙΜΟ ΤΟΥ ΓΑΜΠΡΟΥ...
The groom arrives first at the church and waits for the bride to show up. Meanwhile, the groom's friends make jokes by telling him that the bride is running late and might have run away. Ο γαμπρός φτάνει πρώτος στην εκκλησία και περιμένει τη νύφη. Στο μεταξύ, οι φίλοι του τον πειράζουν πως η νύφη μάλλον το μετάνιωσε και δεν θα έρθει γιατί έχει αργήσει.
6. Wedding rings...
6. ΒΕΡΕΣ...
Αt the start of the ceremony, the couple places the rings on the tips of their wedding fingers, and the best man will exchange them three times. The priest will then bless them three times. Στην αρχή της τελετής οι βέρες θα τοποθετηθούν στην άκρη των δαχτύλων του ζευγαριού και ο Κουμπάρος θα τις αλλάξει θέση τρείς φορές. Έπειτα, ο ιερέας θα ευλογήσει τις βέρες τρεις φορές.
7. Common cup...
7. ΔΙΣΚΟΠΟΤΗΡΟ...
The couple shares wine by taking three sips using a common cup. This represents their successful union. Το ζευγάρι μοιράζεται το ίδιο ποτήρι πίνοντας τρείς γουλιές κρασί. Αυτή η κίνηση συμβολίζει την ένωσή τους.
8. Marital crowns...
8. ΣΤΕΦΑΝΑ...
The marital crowns also symbolize the union of two people as one. The best man swaps them three times. Τα στέφανα συμβολίζουν επίσης την ένωση του ζευγαριού και ο κουμπάρος τους τα αλλάζει τρεις φορές.
9. Throw rice on the couple...
9. ΤΟ ΠΕΤΑΓΜΑ ΤΟΥ ΡΥΖΙΟΥ...
The bride and groom take their first steps as a couple and walk around the altar three times. At this time all guests throw rice on them so that their wedding grows deep roots. Ο γαμπρός και η νύφη κάνουν τα πρώτα τους βήματα σαν ζευγάρι πίσω από τον ιερέα κάνοντας τρεις κύκλους. Σε αυτό το σημείο οι καλεσμένοι πετούν ρύζι για να "ριζώσει" ο γάμος τους.
10. Sugar-coated almonds...
10. ΚΟΥΦΕΤΑ...
It's believed that if the single ladies take sugar-coated almonds and put them under their pillow they will dream of the person they will marry. Πιστεύεται οτι αν οι ελεύθερες κοπέλες βάλουν κάτω απο το μαξιλάρι τους κουφέτα θα ονειρευτούν τον άνθρωπο που θα παντρευτούν.
11. Honk the horn...
11. ΚΟΡΝΑΡΙΣΜΑ...
After the wedding ceremony, all the cars line up and they follow each other to the reception honking their horn the whole way there. Μετά το μυστήριο οι καλεσμένοι μπαίνουν σε μια σειρά με τα αυτοκινητά τους και ακολουθεί ο ένας τον άλλο εώς τον χώρο της δεξίωσης κορνάροντας.
12. Bonbons...
12. ΜΠΟΜΠΟΝΙΕΡΕΣ...
Bonbons are beautifully packaged odd-numbered sugar-coated almonds that symbolize purity and fertility. Οι μπομπονιέρες περιέχουν οπωσδήποτε μονό αριθμό από κουφέτα και συμβολίζουν την αγνώτητα και την γονιμότητα.
13. Dance...
13. ΧΟΡΟΣ...
After the couple's first dance, all family members and guests join them holding hands and dancing in circles till sunrise. Μετά τον πρώτο χορό του ζευγαριού, όλοι οι συγγενείς και καλεσμένοι χορεύουν παραδοσιακά τραγούδια μέχρι το πρωί.
14. Smashing plates...
14. ΣΠΑΣΙΜΟ ΠΙΑΤΩΝ...
It was once believed that a wedding could draw some bad energy so smashing a few plates would ward off the evil spirits. Παλαιότερα πίστευαν πως ένας γάμος τραβούσε τα κακά πνεύματα, έτσι σπάγοντας μερικά πιάτα τα έδιωχναν μακριά.
15. Superstition spitting...
15. ΜΑΤΙΑΣΜΑ...
It is believed people pretending to spit on the couple three times protects it from getting the evil eye i.e. negative energy in their wedding. Πιστεύεται ότι μπορεί να αποφευχθεί το μάτι, δηλαδή η αρνητική ενέργεια στη ζωή ενός ζευγαριού, φτύνωντας τρεις φορές.
16. Greek greeting...
16. Ο ΧΑΙΡΕΤΙΣΜΟΣ...
Greeks are very warm-hearted people. They greet you by kissing both your cheeks for hello and goodbye. Οι Έλληνες είναι πολύ ζεστός και φιλόξενος λαός. Σε καλοσωρίζουν και σε αποχαιρετούν πάντα με φιλιά και στα δύο μάγουλα.
