Cartagena is packed with history. The walled city is made up of colonial buildings lined with flowers, cobblestone streets, horse carriages, and plenty of restaurants and boutiques. You can walk the city walls, explore the fortress that’s been protecting the city for hundreds of years. Be sure to check out the Torre del Reloj, the historically important and monument-filled Plaza Aduana, the vibrant Plaza Santo Domingo with its Botero statue, and the leafy green Plaza Bolivar that’s frequently filled with dancers and performers.
The greatest fortress ever built by the Spaniards in any of their colonies, the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas still dominates an entire section of Cartagena's cityscape. It was commissioned in 1630, and construction began in 1657. Some of the original tunnels are lit and are open to visitors – an eerie walk not to be missed. The fortress is a short walk over the bridge from Getsemaní.
A 10 min walk from the old city. Getsemani is a charming trendy area next to the historical center where you will find street art, wall murals, music and lots of dancing.
This convent that was initially founded in 1607 and fortified two centuries later, is located on the highest point in the city and you’ll get the best views of Cartagena and its beaches from here. There's a chapel with an image of La Virgen de la Candelaria and a beautiful courtyard.

There are beaches in the town of Cartagena about 10 mins ride from the wall city. Beware that these beaches are filled with vendors. They can be quiet annoying if you are trying to have a nice relaxing time at the beach. If you do end up buying a service from them, make sure you have establish a price ahead of time as they will try to up charge you. The most beautiful beaches are located in the nearby islands (Islas del rosario and Baru) and typically will require pre arrange transportation
