As so many love stories begin, we met on a good ol' fashioned dating app. We both found one another incredibly interesting. Stefán, a historian and foreign news journalist, and Sarah, a PR professional with some past political campaign experience, had much to talk about. Our first date was in August of 2019, when Sarah was in Iceland for an Icelandic course at the University Centre of the Westfjords. We met at Sandholt on Laugavegur; that date lasted hours. Sarah went home to the U.S. and soon COVID-19 hit the world. We both moved on, mostly. We kept in touch here and there, but perhaps we have Pete Buttigieg to thank for our rekindled connection; we communicated more frequently as the 2020 U.S. presidential election was around the corner and we both became fast fans of Mayor Pete. Eventually, we joyfully celebrated Joe Biden's 2020 presidential win "together" with champagne. Our celebratory communication carried on and on and so, too, did our feelings grow for one another. (Thanks, Joe!) By 2021 when Iceland opened up its border to Americans, Sarah booked a flight for a two plus month trip to Iceland so we could give dating a fair chance. Our 2021 summer was full of happy memories together — a sunny day trip to Viðey, a roadtrip to Siglufjörður, a rainy day trip to Snæfellsnes, a visit to Árbær Open Air Museum on Icelandic National Day where Sarah met Benni for the first time. Sarah visited Iceland again and again, and Stefán visited Salt Lake City to see Sarah's life there — getting the unanimous seal of approval from Sarah's best friends. Flash-forward to January 2023 and Harpa Elísabet arrived in Las Vegas. Harpa needed a few medical procedures before we could move anywhere, so Stefán traveled back and forth to Las Vegas until Sarah and Harpa finally moved to Reykjavík in September 2024. Our weekends are full of trips to local bakeries, neighborhood playgrounds, the city libraries, and Costco. ;) Life is good. Stefán proposed on Christmas morning, Sarah's favorite day of the year.
