This place is a MUST! Cha Gorreana is the oldest, and one of the last remaining tea plantations in Europe. Take a self guided tour around the grounds and enjoy free tea at the end. Tip, if you visit during the week you can see the employees roast and package the tea.
Sao Miguel has a lot of scenic overlooks called "Miradouros" and they are clearly marked along the highway where you can pull off, park and check out the breathtaking views. Many of them even offer picnic tables! Although, a tourist destination—Miradouro Vista do Rei is a classic, you literally cannot beat the views. Be sure to pull over and check out the creepy hotel on the way there! P.S. If you're afraid of heights, stand at a distance.
Terra Nostra Garden is tucked inside of Furnas Valley and dates back to 1775, when American merchant Thomas Hickling fell in love with Furnas and decided to create the perfect relaxation haven which still seduces every visitor today. Terra Nostra Garden is a world reference for plant lovers and has already been awarded by Condé Nast Traveller in the category of "Best Green Retreats." P.S. Although the garden is known for it's Thermal Pool, we recommend just visiting the gorgeous grounds.
The beach is a SURFER'S PARADISE (oh yeah, and for non surfers too!). The beach is free to all, handicap accessible, wifi enabled, and has restrooms, showers, and changing facilities. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. There is also a restaurant and a surf school located on the beach.
Portas do Mar is a shopping/restaurant center that is located right by the water! There is also a beach located next door to the shopping center. Paid parking to access the shopping center is located underground.
Caldeira Velha is a waterfall of warm, iron water where you can take a dip, it is located on the north slope of the Fogo Volcano. If you are looking to enjoy the thermal pools, arrive first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds. The mineral-rich water of the warm pools will leave a stain on light clothes. Therefore, be sure to bring a dark bathing suit and a dark towel. Likewise, if you plan on getting your hair wet, do not wear light clothes to visit this natural hot spring.
Lagoa do Fogo, (Lake of Fire), was created as a result of the volcanic activity in the area, created around 15,000 years ago. The lake is the highest elevated lake on Sao Miguel island and spans nearly two miles. here are two main viewpoints from above – Miradouro da Barrossa and Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo, where you can enjoy the views from a few different angles.
Ponta Da Ferraria is a hot spring and a lookout point on Sao Miguel’s west shore. At this unique natural attraction, you will have an opportunity to swim in warm, volcanic waters, while you enjoy a brilliant view of the sea and cliffs. This sit down outdoor bar/restaurant is one of our favorite places and is located right on Santa Barbara beach. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, be sure to grab a cocktail to-go from their stand alone bar adjacent to the restaurant and enjoy on the beach. If you are looking for grilled lapas, the have the best one around!
Alabote is a restaurant located near the waterfront in downtown Ribeira Grande. The seafood is super fresh and the cheese, bread and pineapple jam board that they serve where you are first seated is to die for. Note, don't be in a rush when you dine here, the servers like to take their time. However, with gorgeous views of the ocean, you will surely not mind the time!
