Alyssa and Spencer had their first date on a hot June night in 2020 in a short period when the first COVID lockdown lifted. Spencer’s plan for cold beers at Fieldwork Brewing was short-lived as he brought an expired ID and could not be served. They seamlessly pivoted to a now shared favorite restaurant and bar– Kupros Craft House– where they sat on the upstairs patio discussing their shared love of travel, Sacramento, museum audio tours, the movie Lady Bird, basketball (the Sacramento Kings and Gonzaga Bulldogs), trying new farm-to-fork restaurants, and their mutual dislike of eggs. Just two days later, Spencer, rather boldly, invited Alyssa to meet again that night. Alyssa agreed but was surprised to learn she was actually crashing his best friend Kyle’s birthday party. While this was an unconventional second date, Alyssa says that meeting so many of his friends so early made her even more excited about a relationship with Spencer. They ended up having four dates that first week and have not stopped since. Both of them say they knew from that first date that this was something special and they were right. Just as they seamlessly pivoted their first date plans when needed, they have readily supported one another through all of the unexpected changes life has thrown their way through the last few years of COVID, job changes, and more. They have continued talking endlessly (maybe Alyssa more so than Spencer) and have experienced what they both love, together: exploring Sacramento, traveling around the US and Italy, attending most Kings games and many Zags games, and eating egg-free meals. Spencer proposed in March 2023 in the McKinley Park Rose Garden– a local favorite spot (that happens to have a scene in Lady Bird) followed by a celebratory dinner at one of their favorite restaurant’s– Mulvaney’s. After dinner, Spencer surprised Alyssa with an engagement party with friends who traveled from near and far to celebrate with them at the place they fell in love– Kupros.
