If you are planning to stay longer in Kuala Lumpur (the main city of Malaysia), you don't need to rent a car to go around. If you stay in the main city, there are lots of sky bridges to walk to different malls and attraction areas. However, if you want to go far you will need to use an app called Grab (similar to Uber). Predownload the app and put in your payment method is recommended. I have a hard time using my card in Grab. It sometimes takes one to two days to verify. Which means you SHOULD have some cash (ringgit) with you. Please break it apart for the Grab driver as well, just in case they don't have change.
Please please have some cash with you! Lots of places in Malaysia don't take cards. Also, if you plan to bring USD to exchange in Malaysia please only have NEW USD money. Lots of money changers WILL NOT accept old USD. Also if you want the best exchange value, it is better to exchange $100 and $50. The $20-$1 bill exchange rate is much lower. Here is all the currency exchange location: https://www.travelvui.com/malaysia/kuala-lumpur/the-5-best-money-changers-in-kuala-lumpur/ *UAE Exchange @ Masjid India (this is the best rate I have found; however, the area is a bit dangerous at night) – Address: No. 70, Jalan Bunus Off, Jalan Masjid India, 50100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Phone: +603 2202 7302 – Opening hours: Daily 09:30 – 20:00

Unfortunately, we decided to choose a venue that will not be providing any accommodation.
Please check with your cell phone services to make sure your phone is unlocked! If you still own money on your phone, you will not be able to unlock your phone. Unlocking can take up to a couple of days. Once unlock you have two options 1. Google Fi 2. Malaysia SIM card, which you can get at the airport. I got mine for $10-20 for unlimited GB for everything. There are tons of cheaper options, I just needed this for work at that time.

I am not sure if any of you tries those fruit before, but here is some fruit I grow up with - Papaya (I know most of you have had it before, but our papaya tastes very different) - Durian - Mangosteen - Custard apple ( I don't like it...) - Loquat - kiwano - physalis - chikoo - snakefruit - jackfruit - ackee - Rose-apple (is very good when eaten fresh, like an apple but juicier) *some of the fruits are mostly used for cooking, so keep that in mind before trying it.
You never have to tip in Malaysia. It is nice to give some small tips to hotel cleaners, but it is not necessary.
Email/text welcome :)
I would said majority of Malaysia speaks some English for minor communication. If you stay in a hotel the staff is often pretty good. The majority of people speak Malay, Mandarin, and English. However don’t be surprised if you still can’t understand them. Because we love to combine all three or multiple languages in one sentence… 😊
Yes! Please bring your kids! If you need a high chair or any special things, please let us know way ahead of time!
Malaysia is a pretty safe place to travel alone. It's still a good idea to be cautious at night, etc. Please travel with another person, especially if you are ordering Grab (Uber).
If you not planning to shopping at market and only food at small food court, $50 for a couple is plenty enough for a day or two. If u plan to eat inside the mall they often accept credit card. You might need some extra for Malaysia Uber just incase your card won’t work. It happened to me multiple times with the app. Uber there is around $10 for long trips.
