City of Como is a romantic place, which gave its name to the lake. Como is easy to walk around, and its tourist attractions are within walking distance of the train station and boat landing. One of the best things to do to enjoy panorama is go up funicular to Brunate. From there are also a few hiking trails. If you prefer staying closer to the lake, enjoy the lakefront promenade and beautiful gardens of Villa Olmo. On a cultural side, Duomo of Como is one of the best cathedrals you can see in Lombardy. And as you stroll past little shops in city centre, you can't help notice the abundance of silk. Como has a long history as the center of Italy's silk manufacture, so it's a good place to do some shopping or visit the Silk Museum, where you can learn about the old textile tradition.
Born around a small, ancient Cistercian monastery, Cernobbio today is one of the finest resorts in the area, a picturesque city whose old town is the Piazza del Risorgimento directly overlooking the lake and its sumptuous villas: Villa Erba, Villa d ‘ Este, Villa Bernasconi, Art Nouveau Villa and Villa Fontanelle Pizzo.
Menaggio, in the foothills of the Alps, is a lively resort with a lakeside promenade. Menaggio is popular with outdoor enthusiasts for walking or hiking, swimming, windsurfing and rock climbing. Villa Carlotta, just south of Menaggio, has beautiful gardens open to visitors. You can tour the inside with its original 18th-century furniture and art works.
Bellagio, known as the pearl of the lake, is in a beautiful setting where the three branches of Lake Como come together. It is the prettiest town on the lake, with its setting on the long point where the lake's three arms meet. No matter which way you look, the views are superb and usually framed by gardens or carefully maintained buildings. Make sure to visit the beautiful gardens at Villa Melzi, this is also the location where we took our engagement photos.
Placed like a sentinel in the mid-section of Lake Como, at the intersection of the three branches of the lake, Varenna forms an excellent home base to visit the triangle area formed by Bellagio, Menaggio, and Cadenabbia/Tremezzo (with Villa Carlotta) or to explore the hiking and mountain bike trails of the Esino valley. The quaint little town’s awe-inspiring scenery and more relaxed atmosphere make it a perfect retreat from the more touristy places around Lake Como
Lecco is the second largest city of the lake after Como. Lecco inspired Alessandro Manzoni in his masterpiece “The Betrothed”. You will have the opportunity to visit the house of Lucia, the Church of Don Abbondi the Manzoni Museum (house where the writer spent his childhood), the Cathedral of St. Nicolas, the Bovara Palace, the Bridge Azzone Visconti, old market square and many other monuments.
Comacina Island is a small island in the middle of the lake, in the branch of Como, between Argegno and Lavedo peninsula. This island was inhabited in ancient times by the Romans and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Lombardy
Our favorite restaurant in the area ! If you like truffle as much as we do, you will LOVE Ristorante Rino !
A must see on the lake ! Villa del Balbianello will leave you breathless, due to its beautiful terraced gardens and picturesque structure. Located on the tip of the Lavedo headland, in the locality of Lenno (Tremezzina), the villa provides a stunning view of Isola Comacina and the western shore of Lake Como. The unique location of Villa Balbianello allows visitors to get there only by foot (walking on a 1 km footpath which starts from Via degli Artigiani) or by a taxiboat that leaves from the Lenno beach (€7.5 for the roundtrip) The villa was featured in a number of feature films, including Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.
