Fort Worden is a beautiful, historic military fort with many hiking options and lots of space to walk along the beach. You can also check out the old forts which date from WWII and beyond. If you're a film fan, you might recognize the main quad from the movie Officer and a Gentleman!
Right in the middle of downtown is this circa-1907 theater screening new releases, ballet, opera & plays, plus a cafe with food & cocktails. Locals rave about their popcorn, and to be a true Northwesterner you're apparently supposed to add nutritional yeast (Sophie was very unsure, but says it's surprisingly good!).
Take the ferry by foot from downtown Port Townsend to Coupeville and walk to Fort Casey to enjoy a day on the beach exploring an old military fort. When traveling on the ferry by foot, you really don't need an advance reservation and so this is a fun, last-minute trip you can do with just a half day.
Downtown Port Townsend is centered around Water Street, a lovely main street featuring great shops, restaurants, galleries and cafes. From west to east, some of our favorites include: the Pourhouse, Quimper Mercantile, the Cellar Door, Waterfront Pizza, Better Living Through Coffee, Hanazono Asian Noodle, Vintage by Port Townsend Vineyards (also have a great vineyard/tasting room out of town a bit!), PT Soda Fountain & Diner (aka Nifty 50's Ice Cream!), Velocity Coffee (in our wedding venue at the NWMC), and the Hudson Point Cafe. You might also check out the Haller Fountain just a block off Water Street and walk to Uptown via the large public stairway. In Uptown, you'll find the local favorite Pane d'Amore Artisan Bakery, the old-school Aldrich's general store, and a great Farmer's Market on Saturdays on Tyler Street.
You won't be able to miss the views of the Olympics if you tried, but a visit to the Hurricane Ridge or another hiking spot in the Olympics is a must. One of Louis' favorites is the Tubal Cain Mine Trailhead. Stop in Port Angeles for lunch on the way and explore another small town. Be mindful that you'll need a National Parks Service, Forest Service, or State Parks parking pass in most locations.
A little out of downtown is a favorite date-night spot at the drive in. This single-screen seasonal drive-in has a snack stand and is situated in the middle of a forest clearing. Bring friends and have a fun night out.
Local American eats dished in historic digs where diners are prompted to don provided playful garb. Sophie and her parents actually ate here on a trip when she was an infant -- who knew she's marry a guy from down the street!
