Flight
The easiest way to get to Shelter Island is to fly into JFK or LGA. Driving from these airports to Shelter Island takes about 2.5 hours without traffic. Public transportation options also exist including the LIRR train and Jitney bus (see below for more details).
Train
You can take the LIRR train to Greenport via the Ronkonkoma branch, but only a few trains make the full trip to Greenport — please check schedules! The last Greenpoint train leaves Jamaica around 6PM. There will be a brief transfer at Ronkonkoma station to the Greenport train. Tickets can be purchased at the station or ahead of time on the MTA Train Time app. From Penn Station/Grand Central: Take the LIRR Ronkonkoma branch to Greenport. From JFK: Take the Airtrain to Jamaica station, then follow LIRR train directions on the Ronkokoma branch. From LGA: Take a taxi to Jamaica station, then follow LIRR train directions on the Ronkokoma branch. This will drop you off right next to the North Ferry which you can walk on to ride to Shelter Island (see below for more ferry info).

If you are not driving, another way to get to Shelter Island is by taking the Hampton Jitney. Take the Jitney from NYC or Brooklyn on the North Fork route to Greenport. From Greenport, you can walk to the North Ferry to get to Shelter Island.

The North Ferry runs between Greenport, NY and Shelter Island. There are no reservations - traffic is boarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cars and bicycles pay on board. The ferry takes about 10 minutes, and runs every 10-20min, with the last boat leaving Shelter Island at 1145pm and last boat leaving Greenport at midnight. Please note that this ferry is CASH ONLY! The South Ferry runs between North Haven, NY (town right next to Sag Harbor) and Shelter Island. This ferry also does not take reservations - traffic is boarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cars and bicycles pay on board. The ferry takes about 5 minutes and runs every 10-15 minutes. The last boats on Fri & Sat are 1:45am from Shelter Island and 1:50am from North Haven. Travel Note
For those traveling from points north of New York, the easiest route may be to take the Cross Sound Ferry New London, CT to Orient Point, NY. This ferry needs to be booked in advance and you can make a car reservation on the Cross Sound Ferry site below. Ferries are available every hour on the hour and the ride is generally ~1 hour and 20 minutes. Once in Orient Point, NY, you will drive/taxi about 15 minutes to the North Ferry located in Greenport, NY (see above) and make your way to Shelter Island.

As we would love for everyone to be able to stay with us on Shelter Island and celebrate for the weekend, we strongly recommend booking your stay as soon as you are able. Hotels in Greenport are also within walking distance to the ferry to Shelter Island and a good option if you choose not to stay on Shelter Island. If you have any issues securing accommodations, do not hesitate to reach out to us directly - we are here to help!
