FAQs

Question

Is it safe?

Answer

San Miguel is a very safe place; however, we would ask that you use common sense as when you are traveling anywhere, whether in the US or internationally. If you take a taxi, make sure you use a green or white one (these are official). Also make sure to agree on a rate to your destination before getting accepting the ride. A ride within the city should cost between 30 pesos and 60 pesos. If you are quoted higher, just ask if they will take less. There is also Uber is San Miguel!

Question

What's the weather like in San Miguel?

Answer

In September, the weather will be in the high 70s during the day and high 50s at night. Be sure to pack a sweater for the cooler nights. September can be rainy as well!

Question

Do I need to rent a car?

Answer

We do not recommend renting a car. San Miguel is a relatively small dense town with narrow, cobblestone streets. The city is extremely walkable but please pack comfortable shoes!! Also, cabs are everywhere.

Question

What about Zika?

Answer

To our knowledge, there is no Zika virus in San Miguel de Allende or Mexico City. The virus is carried by a strain of mosquito (Aedes species) that is not found in high altitude areas – including the majority of Central Mexico. Therefore, since the carrier of the virus does not exist in San Miguel/Mexico City, there have been no cases of Zika in the area and there is no risk of infection for our guests.

Question

Can I drink the water?

Answer

Avoid tap water unless it has been filtered. Please check with your hotel or house to ensure that your tap water is filtered. Ice and water served at most restaurants are typically purified but when it doubt, order bottled water! Bottled water is widely available and short term visitors are advised to use it to brush their teeth, too. DON'T FORGET to drink water! San Miguel is at 6,000 feet so it's important to stay hydrated!

Question

How do I make calls?

Answer

If dialing our cells from the US, you will need to dial 011-52-1 in front of the number. If dialing within Mexico, you may need to add 044- or 045- in front of the cell number if you are dialing from another area or landline.) Make sure you call your US carrier to let them know that you are traveling to Mexico. If you use a smart phone/Iphone: make sure you turn off your Data Services and Roaming or make sure you have a good international roaming plan with Data service included. A lot of places have free wi-fi
