Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site
The family estate of Eleanor Roosevelt with Top Cottage, FDR's favorite retreat. also a lovely hike. Call for open times and to schedule a visit. Covid restrictions require an appointment time.
Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site
Also just about 15 minutes from Poughkeepsie, maybe 3 minutes North of FDR's. This was just a small summer cabin in the woods for the Vanderbilt Family. Gorgeous views! Staatsburgh State Historic Site
Our Favorite Mansion. Home of the Mills and Livingston families. Beautiful views! And they allow sledding on the back hill. Attached to the estate is Norrie Point Park Call for open times and to schedule a visit. Covid restrictions require an appointment time.
Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park
A few blocks walk from the Grand hotel. This is a pedestrian/bicycle walkway across the Hudson. This is not a short walk! There are restrooms and por-o-potties located on both ends and there are parking lots on both the Poughkeepsie and Highland sides. The halfway mark is a great place for a photo. This is where Tom and I went on our second date.
The Culinary Institute of America
If you have time and have not had enough excellent food, make a reservation at one of the CIA's restaurants. The students strive for excellent service and the food is delicious!
Cold Spring Waterfront and Village
Historic Main Street boasts antique shops, boutiques and restaurants. The waterfront has amazing views, a boat dock and a small grassy park. The sun sets early as it ships behind the picturesque Storm King Mountain. There is street parking or a commuter parking lot at the train station one block over. The kayak launch and another small park and the Chapel of our Lady are accessible from the parking lot.
