Flight
O'Hare International Airport is located northwest of the city and very near to where both of our parents live. This airport is around 18 miles or 30 kilometers from the central city. If you plan to drive into or out of the city, keep in mind that Interstate 90 (the Kennedy Expressway) often gets very congested and plans to undergo construction on the reversible express lanes Spring of 2024. This route can take anywhere between 25 minutes to 90 minutes by car depending on the day, time, construction, weather, and/or any scheduled major events. A rideshare service such as Uber or Lyft typically ranges between $50-$100 to commute to/from the city center (tip not expected). Typically local taxi drivers will not offer a flat rate into the city from the airport and will instead use a taximeter to calculate a total based on the distance that you travel. Additional fees will be added to this total if traveling during peak hours, having excess baggage, and based on vehicle size (tip expected). The price of a taxi will be similar to the total for a rideshare service. A cheaper and possibly faster alternative is to travel by train using the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line rail connection between O'Hare and downtown. Travel time via train will typically take about 1 hour and will cost $5 at a Ventra ticket machine. The airport also offers many free shuttle services if you plan to stay at a nearby airport hotel, located outside of the city.
Flight
Midway International Airport is located roughly 12 miles (20 km) from the center of downtown Chicago. In low to moderate traffic, you can expect a drive to take roughly 30 minutes. Those coming on international flights can reach the ‘L’ by following the signs to the Airport Transit System (ATS) where they can get a free train ride to Terminal 2. From there they can locate the “CTA Trains” to the city. This is Chicago's subway system. From Midway Airport to downtown the train ride (Orange Line) should take only about 25 minutes and the fare should be around $2.25. Outside of the airport terminal, there will be taxis to head to your destination without too much of a wait. From Midway International, the taxi fare should be approximately $40 + tip into the center of the city and take 20 – 30 minutes. There are flat rates for shared taxis from both airports, so if you ride with at least one other passenger, you can save a bit of money. This option is only $18 per person from Midway. If you’re interested in rideshare options, you can also use a service like Uber or Lyft to get from Midway International Airport to downtown Chicago. This typically costs about $25 from Midway International Airport. After scheduling your Uber or Lyft, you can find the pickup point where your driver will arrive by following the Rideshare Pickup sign nearest to your terminal. You’ll have to download either app onto your smartphone to use these rideshare services.
