Our journey began in the spring of 2019, a meeting so simple yet so perfect that it felt destined. Karishma, a lifelong Southern California native, chose to attend a university over 2,000 miles away in Erie, Pennsylvania—a choice that would change everything. Simon, hailing from a rural town near Pittsburgh, decided on the same university somewhat on a whim, influenced by his sibling’s positive experiences. Neither of us anticipated finding one another, but fate had different plans. In the fall of 2018, we both enrolled in the Resident Assistant class on campus, aiming to save some money on room and board. For an entire semester, we sat on opposite sides of the same room, completely unaware of each other’s presence. It wasn’t until the spring semester, during a course evaluation, that our paths finally crossed. Karishma was sitting alone at a table, engrossed in a puzzle. Despite others milling about, she was the only one attempting it. Simon walked in and noticed her—this beautiful girl focused amidst a room full of people who hadn’t approached her. Gathering courage, he walked over and asked, “Could I help you with this?” She looked up, our eyes met, and with a warm smile, she replied, “Of course!” That simple exchange over a puzzle became the starting point of our love story. Every day since, we’ve looked back on that chance encounter with gratitude, amazed at how a series of small choices led us to one another. From a simple gesture grew a lifetime of love we never saw coming.
