Travel Note

About the Dolomites

The Dolomites is a National Park located across the provinces of South Tyrol, Trentino and Belluno. What's unique about this place is that it's wedged between Austria and Italy, so you will see more than one name for each location as well as more than one language. This place is in the heart of the Alps, which means the closest airport will be about 2 hours away. It's very easy to move around in a car and it's extremely well connected to major hubs, including airports in Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Even though you can choose to use public transportation, we highly recommend renting a car.

Flight

To Venice

There are several airports you can fly into, but the closest one is Venice. Airport Options:  Bolzano Airport (BZO), Italy  Innsbruck Airport (INN), Austria  Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), Italy  Treviso Airport (TSF), Italy  Verona Airport (VRN), Italy  Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), Italy  Munich Airport (MUC), Germany

Rental Car

Recommended

Hertz was our preferred company, but there's a lot of companies to rent from at the airport IMPORTANT: Make sure to get your International Driver's Permit! It's really simple and affordable at any AAA location. Driving Time (based on which airport you arrive in):  Bolzano Airport, Italy | 1 hour to Ortisei, 2:15 hours Cortina d’Ampezzo  Venice Marco Polo Airport, Italy | 3:20 hours to Ortisei, 2 hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo  Treviso Airport, Italy | 3 hours to Ortisei, 1:50 hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo  Verona Airport, Italy | 2:15 hours to Ortisei, 3 hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo  Milan Malpensa Airport, Italy | 4:30 hours to Ortisei, 5 hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo  Innsbruck Airport, Austria | 1:30 hours to Ortisei, 2:40 hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo  Munich Airport, Germany | 4 hours to Ortisei, 5 hours to Cortina d’Ampezzo

Train

Alternative

The train ride through South Tyrol Alps is one of the most incredible in Europe. Due to its position, the Dolomites is well connected via Trenitalia, Austrian Federal Railways, Deutsche Bahn and Swiss Federal Railways. To get to Cortina from Venice Marco Polo Airport, you can use Cortina Express, FlixBus or ATVO bus.
